Before mountains formed, the climate wasn't as good as it can be today. Mountains have the ability to have the winds be blown upwards and around peaks and ridges. This is a good thing because this cools and condenses the wind which creates clouds and precipitation. They also create boundaries for different areas/places such as states. Back then people could not find/get a variety of minerals as easily as you would with mountains around, for example water. They also couldn't get to experience the many outdoor activities mountains have to offer, that is until they were formed.
How Mountains we
re discovered.French fur traders, Paul Mallet along with Pierre, were the first Europeans to reveal an unknown mountain range in 1739. On their exploration throughout the Great Plains, they sighted an unfamiliar range of mountains placed at the headquarters of The Platte River, a range of mountains local American Indian tribes would name, "The Rockies".
Mountains are formed by volcanic activity by magma being pushed up upon Earth's surface and hardening, leaving a layer of soft rock above it creating a dome-shaped mountain. Mountains can also be formed by rivers or streams from the water carving in stone and forming deep channels. Lastly, the most common way a mountain forms is when Earth's tectonic plates are smashing together resulting in one plate lifting upward and the other tilting downward.

Where Mountains Stand Today
Mountains are placed in many areas of the world. As of today, mountains are used for climbers, scenery-seeking tourists, Forestry companies to grow forests and harvest wood, farming, water authorities who pump out water to towns/cities, also for people to live on.
